Gene-Edited Market Garden Seeds: What Should Be the Organic and Grassroots Response?
Genetically modified (GM or genetically engineered) seeds for market gardeners and home gardeners are a new target market for Bayer and other biotechnology companies. The new genetic engineering techniques of gene editing, such as CRISPR, will soon mean the release of new GM fruits and vegetables, targeting small growers. Some will not need to be approved by the federal government and may not be disclosed as GM to farmers. For example, Bayer is proposing to launch gene-edited mustard green seeds, and a limited amount of GM romaine and GM purple tomato seeds have already been sold in the US. Join us for this interactive session to get a mini-intro to gene editing and the latest updates, and to discuss together what this turning point means and how organic producers can respond and protect themselves.
