2025 BC Organic Conference Session

How does solidarity in food systems work?

Building on sessions at the 2023 BC Organic Conference that focused on necessary conditions for intersectional farm communities to thrive, this two-part series will explore the concept and practice of solidarity.

How does solidarity in food systems work? Building on the first session, yet relevant on its own, this session will look at possibilities for solidarity within and beyond food systems. We will hear stories about historic successes that have come out of shared struggle within the organic farming community in BC and nationally. An open fishbowl conversation will highlight the collective intelligence and experience in the room related to solidarity building and actions, and we will collectively brainstorm about ways that we can make our burdens lighter by sharing them, and make our efforts to improve our food systems more effective and efficient by using the structures available to join forces with others who share our vision for a better world.

From both sessions, folks can expect to come away with a deeper understanding of solidarity and a sense of possibilities for ways to be in solidarity.
