2025 BC Organic Conference Session
Integrating Livestock into Organic Systems Using Beneficial Management Practices (BMPs)
This in-depth workshop explores how organic farms can integrate livestock using climate-smart Beneficial Management Practices like cover cropping, rotational grazing, and multi-species management. Participants will work in small groups guided by SSMPA Grazing Mentors and experienced agrologists.
Participants are encouraged to bring:
- Draft or existing grazing plans
- Maps or layouts of their farm
- Specific questions or challenges
- Dreams for integrating animals into their farm ecosystem
This hands-on session will include:
- Rotational grazing strategies adapted for organic systems
- Integrating someone else’s livestock into your organic farming operation
- Cover crop-livestock synergies for soil health and weed control
- Peer examples from BC-based farms and video/media content featured on the FaRM Learning Hub
- Infrastructure planning tips, including lessons from SSMPA’s Electric Fencing Masterclass Series
- Resources for climate resilience and GHG mitigation through managed grazing
Breakout groups will support collaborative problem-solving and design tailored action steps. Participants will leave with practical tools, fresh perspectives, and access to regionally adapted resources like SSMPA’s fact sheets, videos, podcasts, and mentor networks.
