2025 BC Organic Conference Session

Understanding organic pesticides – use, health and safety and environmental impacts

Tamara and Molly have worked in organic tree fruit – consulting and on-farm food safety – for over 15 years each. This session will address common misconceptions and opportunities for improvement observed on farms when it comes to plant protection products (organic pesticides and other inputs).

The session has a technical focus, referencing the Permitted Substances List. It will review common plant production products that are sprayed in organic production and build understanding of best management practices. Other areas of focus include: toxicity and phytotoxicity; CBs and approval; labels and the law, labels and proper use e.g., food safety implications; machinery calibration practices and how to determine correct application rates; safe storage requirements; health and safety practices for safe spray application; and resistance management.
