Nigel Francis and Laura Hannant of Cartwheel Farm in the Creston Valley are passionate advocates for community-based agriculture and local food systems. A decade ago they purchased a sunny, south-facing five-acre property that was once an old orchard and for the past 10 years, they have focused on building soil to support their intensive certified organic two-acre market garden.
Nigel and Laura are exploring ways to build soil with inputs sourced closer to home. This includes collecting organic matter from local businesses and composting it on-farm as a source of local compost.
