Nigel Francis of Cartwheel Farm and Scott Humphries of Bent Plow Farm have been certified organic mixed vegetable farmers for 10 years, where they both farm approximately 2 acres using a permanent bed system. In 2025 they participated in a project with the Kootenay Soil Building Network where they took a deep dive to reflect on their annual soil nutrient and financial inputs since they started farming. 

During this process, the farmers learned about nitrogen availability from various inputs and how they can consider other composts and amendments for their farm sustainability and production goals. The results of these case studies are available to other farmers and the public to learn from their experiences.
