Emma Sowiak and Scott Humphries of Bent Plow Farm started their market garden farm in a forested mountain region outside of Nelson, BC. Over the past eight years, they’ve put in tremendous effort to build healthy, productive soil including the intensive removal of rocks, preparing the land for cultivation, and applying tonnes of compost to create a stable environment for intensive vegetable production.
Bent Plow has been focusing on strategic nutrient management —applying just the right amount of compost to maintain organic matter levels, while fine-tuning fertilizer use to meet crop needs and reduce waste.
